Walk into almost any workshop, depot, warehouse, or trade business and you'll find the same thing happening.

A row of cordless tool batteries charging on a bench.

Lithium-ion batteries power everything from drills and grinders to impact drivers and saws. While they are incredibly effective, damaged, faulty, incompatible, or improperly charged batteries can fail unexpectedly and, in some cases, lead to thermal runaway and fire.

The good news? Most battery charging risks can be identified in just a few minutes.

That's why we've created our Simple Power Tool Battery Checklist.

Common issues include:

  • Batteries left charging unattended overnight

  • Damaged batteries continuing to be used

  • Chargers positioned near cardboard, paper towels, or other combustible materials

Five Quick Questions to Ask

1. Are damaged batteries being removed from service?

Swollen, cracked, leaking, overheated, or physically damaged batteries should be isolated immediately and assessed according to your workplace procedures.

2. Are chargers in good condition?

Damaged charging equipment can create additional risks. Check leads, plugs, housings, and connections regularly.

3. Is charging taking place away from combustible materials?

Paper products, packaging, cleaning chemicals, and other combustible items should be kept well clear of charging areas.

4. Is there adequate supervision of charging batteries?

Charging batteries should not be left unattended for extended periods where possible, particularly overnight.

5. Does everyone know what to do if a battery starts overheating?

Workers should understand warning signs such as unusual heat, swelling, smoke, odours, or hissing sounds and know the correct emergency response procedures.

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

Battery incidents are often preceded by warning signs that go unnoticed.

A simple weekly inspection can help identify issues before they become serious.

By taking a few minutes to assess your charging setup, you can improve workplace safety, reduce fire risk, and ensure batteries remain reliable for day-to-day operations.
